How to Get Ulric’s Kukris, Nyx Ulric’s Daggers from Kingsglaive in Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV, a fantasy that took ten years to come true, is not a game in which you can spend a couple of hours and simply decide whether it is good or not. On the contrary, it is a title that beckons you to get lost and consumes your time to enjoy it calmly and quietly, without haste, squeezing the most of all its virtues.

Getting the best equipment in Final Fantasy XV is vital if you want to overcome the most complicated fights. Daggers are the fastest type of weapon in the game. Its attack power is not that high, but it is the best weapon to quickly fill the Ancestral Chorus gauge, thanks to its fast combos.

When the words “best” and “daggers” are joined in the same sentence, a third name appears, Nyx Ulric. However, because he is seldom mentioned in the game, what often follows the name of the star of this Nyx Ulric guide in a conversation is the question “Who?”

Long story short, Nyx Ulric is one of the elite Kingsglaive group of soldiers that raises to prominence during Prince Noctis’s absence when the forces of the belligerent Niflheim attack the city of Insomnia, seeking to control the Crystal of the kingdom of Lucis.

He is the main badass from the Kingsglaive movie and uses some cool daggers referred to as Ulric’s Kukris in the game. These are arguably the best daggers in Final Fantasy XV, and in this Nyx Ulric guide, we’ll learn all about them and how to find them.

My Bottom-Line Up Front:

Though acquiring them is not easy, the speed-focused player will be glad to have Ulric’s Kukris equipped. So here is a quick TL; DR with 3 three steps to acquire Ulric’s Kukris:

  • Step 1: As you go up the elevator after the fight against Ifrit in Chapter 14, before going to the throne room, go back down in it and go outside.
  • Step 2: Keep moving forward, defeating the Red Giants, the Black Flans, Ariadne, Yojimbo, and the Nagarani.
  • Step 3: Spawn the level 82 Psychomancer and defeat it.
  • Ta-da! When you defeat this enemy, he will drop Ulric’s Kukris.

They are curved blades belonging to a hero who fought to the end for the future of his homeland. One was forged in Insomnia and the other in Galahd.

Lore

He’s one of the six pillars supporting Eos since ancient times. He delivered the secret of fire and became the king of the ancient civilization, Solheim.

He fell after the Infaustian War, and after suffering from osteopathy, he came back to life in a state close to that of the cadents. Yet, both his body and soul suffer in the clutches of darkness.

Strategy

Phase 1

Ifrit won’t give you much trouble in this first phase. While you attack him from a distance, you’ll only have to be careful to dodge his flames by projecting Lux to the side (a short tap will do the trick). You can also somersault to his side, but don’t wait until the last minute to do it, or he’ll reach you. In the end, you must “finish him off” by summoning Bahamut.

Phase 2

Things get more complicated in the second phase, and now you will switch to a different strategy. For starters, use any weapon but one that is imbued with fire, either by default or through Ignis’ skill. Then, keep in mind that when Ifrit is engulfed in flames, he is immune to damage. You have to wait at a distance, and just at the moment when they are removed, project yourself to him to hit him with Lux Impetus and then release as many hits as you can.

The issue is that this period without flames is intermittent/brief, and that’s where the difficulty and tediousness of the fight come from. The “projection” can be made from the ground or a high spot, depending on what suits you best at any given moment. Finally, when you have very little life left, summon another Sidereal, in this case, Shiva, who will give you the…. final touch.

After that, you’re going to head inside the palace. Keep heading in until you get to the elevators. Now, you don’t need to go up them here. What you need to listen for is the sound of the roar of giant demons. That lets you know that you triggered your ability to do this. From there, turn around and head back out to the courtyard, the area where you just defeated Ifrit.

Now you should see two Red Giants, and you need to kill them.

Unfortunately, they are strong against all your weapons and hold some pretty good resistance to most of your spells. Their weakness is your royal arms. So, pick whichever ones you feel comfortable with and be ready to heal because it does take away from your health to attack. Or if you don’t want to use those, use regular weapons. Then, use whatever spells you have. Just know it’s going to take a little longer to kill them.

So, after you have them killed, you’ll keep backtracking. Finally, you will return to the area where you came up from the subway station. But this time, you don’t want to go down right away.

If you pass the stairs that lead down to the subway station, you’ll see three black flans. Go ahead and quit your ring of the open eye and use your death ability against them. So, kind of stay off in the back a little bit. Trust me; the death ability can kill all three of them.

From there, go back to the stairs to the subway station, and you need to make it through here and kill any monsters that spawn inside. Most of the time, you’re also going to get the soldiers. You’ll need to fight the spider lady when you leave the subway station.

A more robust and experienced arachnoid variant. Hunters’ attempts to eliminate this fiery arachnid came too late. By the time they entered the icy caves of Greyshire where it dwells, this monster had already laid its eggs and covered all of Insomnia with its webs.

She’s weak to fire and greatswords. She isn’t that strong, but she has a quick little swing ability with electricity that can be annoying.

After that, head to the south path, where it looks like it’s going into a dark alleyway, and you need to kill Yojimbo.

Now, this is a straightforward fight. If you block his attacks, he leaves himself open to a parry, plus he’s going to have his back exposed to you quite a few times after his attacks, so you should be able to get quite a few blindsides in.

Once that’s over and done with, keep walking down the alleyway and turn the corner, and you’re going to have to fight the two snake bosses here, the two that look like the Nagas.

Lore

An annelid-like creature that crawls through the Crestholm Channels. It resembles the Naga, although a group of serpents nestles in its head, acting as the monster’s hair. The self-proclaimed queen of Crestholm has the power to transform her adversaries into stone, frog, and worse forms.

They’re weak to lightning, but the fight can still be annoying. Even knowing that even if you use things like your enhancement or lightning spells is because they can turn you into stone and use toad on you.

So, if you have a few issues with this fight, you can just run past them and head to the rest area just outside of here, and that way, you can rest up and come back and fight again. But after you kill them, head back out to the main road.

When you come out the other side, you should now see the Psychomancer. You can try to run by it and get to that rest area again if you want. Rest, heal up, save.

A creature who makes his harrowing presence felt in the depths of the Balouve Reservoir and the Steyliff Grove. Blessed with powers that exceed those of the necromancer, this specter, the greatest of the psychomancers, is far from easy to exorcise.

Now, this could be kind of a tough fight. It can cast petrify and has a couple of almost one-shot abilities that just cast death on you. So you might want to hit it with spells and kind of warp in and get a warp strike, a couple of hits now and again, and then warp right back out.

That way, you’re out of range of some of the abilities, giving you more time to react. Another thing you have going for you in this fight is that thanks to how hard he hits you, you should have quite a few opportunities to summon Shiva to help you out.

Once you have killed him, he will drop an item. Go up to the little blue glowy thing, pick it up, and you now have Ulrich’s weapons. These suckers are powerful and come with some bonus stats, minus the ones you can get from Randolph later. These are probably my favorite daggers in the game.

Nyx Ulric Guide: FAQs

Question: Who is Nyx Ulric?

Answer: The film’s main character is a member of the Kingsglaive, an elite guard under direct orders from the king. When he was a boy, he was saved from the clutches of death in the middle of the war by King Regis himself, and from then on, he felt utterly indebted to him.
Nyx is an incredible fighter and has a surprisingly high affinity with the magical power of the royal family.

Question: How do I spawn the Psychomancer?

Answer: An easy indicator to know whether you are ready to spawn the Psychomancer or not is to walk past the elevator and wait until you hear a roaring sound. If you do, walk right back into the courtyard and find both Red Giants. After killing all the minibosses, the final guy Psychomancer should appear at the end of the line.

Question: Can Ulric’s Kukris be bought?

Answer: Essentially, no. The only way to get them is by beating the Psychomancer. They can, however, be sold for 15.000 g… if you have got the guts to sell it, that is.

Parting Words

Regardless of all the characters that emerge in Kingsglaive’s story, from kings to advisors, to revolutionaries, the real protagonist is Nyx Ulric. As an audience, we stood before a character with whom to empathize.

After the film, when I started to control Noctis, who is depicted more as the poor and unprotected son of the king than the hero I expected, he wasn’t much of a warrior to me.

If Nyx had been in the gang, he would walk all over him. Though this never happened in-game, having Noctis use Nyx daggers helped me fantasize. Let a girl dream.
